SpaandanB OpenHouse - 2009

The SpaandanB OpenHouse 2009 event was held on Saturday, April 18th, 2009. SpaandanB Executive Committee and all its volunteers would like to express their sincerest thanks and deepest appreciation for the support of the donors at the event. With your help and generosity, we were able to raise about $25,000 and an anonymous donor matched the funds raised.

Original Program Announcement

It is our pleasure to invite you and your family to "SpaandanB OpenHouse 2009" on Saturday, April 18th, 2009. At the advent of Bengali New Year, we would like to share with you the stories of success that have been made possible by your generous contributions over the last year. More over, we would like to spend the time with you celebrating the New Year with delicious Bengali food, music and more. This year, bay area children would be sharing their thoughts through poster presentation and will also be performing a musical drama.

There is no registration charge for this event. During the event, varities of Bengali food items will be sold by a number of "Baishakhi Stalls". Note that your voluntary contribution will be matched dollar for dollar by an anonymous donor. Your donation is also tax deductible.

First phase of programs (4:00 -7:30 pm at Fremont School Cafeteria):

Baishakhi Stalls featuring authentic Bengali food, jewelry, dresses and more. A "Pitha" competition will be held and there will be attractive prizes for the best participants. There is no charge for stall booking. Stall owner may volun but 25% of the profit is kindly requested to be donated to SpaandanB.

Ekdin Bangalee Holam Re , an informal Bangali fashion competition for boys and girls. Guests up to teen age are requested to come in authentic Bengali outfit. They will be automatically entered into a silent competition and attractive prizes will be given away for Best dressed boy and girl.

Poster Presentation of boys and girls up to teen on the subject "On your trip to Bangladesh". The presentation can be in any form (i.e. painting, collage, cut-n-paste or written descriptions of experience while visiting Bangladesh along with photographs or artworks) and not to exceed a dimension of 20"x30". All projects will be displayed by SpaandanB during the event and each participant will be given a slot to describe his/her work. Each participant will receive a certificate and the best three presentations will receive special awards.

Second phase of programs (8:00 - 10:00 pm at Fremont School Auditorium):

  • SpaandanB project presentation with video and slides.
  • Key note speech by George S. Reppas , an organizer of Stanford University Medical School Endowment Fund.
  • Music presentation by Bay Area kids
  • Mayer Kachhe Shona, a special musical drama portraying the events spanning from language movement to fight for independence of Bangladesh, presented by Bay Area kids.

Through out the event, we will be collecting voluntary contributions to support the ongoing activities of SpaandanB in Bangladesh. Note that every dollar you donate in this event will be matched by an anonymous donor. SpaandanB accepts Zakat also.

Details of Poster Presentation

Boys and girls of all ages (up 'til high school) are invited to participate in this competition. We would like for you to talk about "On Your trip to Bangladesh". The presentation can be in any form (i.e. painting, collage, cut-n-paste or written descriptions of experience while visiting Bangladesh along with photographs or artworks). All submissions will be categorized into 2 groups: one group between kindergarten and Grade 5 and the other one between Grade 6 to Grade 12. This poster should not exceed a dimension of 20"x30".

Participants are requested to mount their final presentations on a 20"x30" foam-board before submission. All projects will be displayed by SpaandanB during the event from 4 pm till 7.30pm and each participant is encouraged to stand in front of their posters to present their work as audience passes by. Participants must be present between 5-6.30pm during the judging of the posters.

All participants will receive SpaandanB certificate. Three best presenters from each group will be awarded during the main show. If you would like to participate, please reply to this message with your full name, grade and age.
