Habibul Alam: A Life of Integrity and Learning

A.S.M. Habibul Alam is remembered as a man of humor, a beloved friend, and a kind-hearted individual whose unwavering passion for education and music defined his life. Though time has passed since his departure, his legacy endures through his life’s work and the values he instilled in those around him.

Born in 1939 into a respected Muslim family in Gaibandha, he was the fifth of eight siblings. His father, Tahsin Ahmed, was a law graduate from Aligarh Muslim University and established his legal practice in Sirajganj, where Habibul Alam spent his early years. He attended Sirajganj Victoria School, excelling academically and earning the admiration of his teachers, including the renowned head teacher, Sashi Mohan. His academic brilliance continued at Carmichael College, Rangpur, where he graduated with distinction, before earning honors and master’s degrees in History from Dhaka University.

A Career Rooted in Integrity and Patriotism

Habibul Alam began his career in journalism before transitioning to banking, joining Eastern Mercantile Bank (later Pubali Bank after Bangladesh’s independence) as a probationary officer. His talent and dedication led him to the United Kingdom for specialized training. Despite opportunities to build a career abroad, his deep patriotism brought him back to Bangladesh, where he took on the responsibility of regional manager for six branches in Sylhet. His efforts played a crucial role in the establishment of eleven new bank branches in Sylhet, expanding financial access in post-independence Bangladesh.

Throughout his career, he remained steadfast in his ethics and integrity, refusing to yield to pressures for unethical practices. His uncompromising principles occasionally led to challenges and threats, but he never wavered in his commitment to justice and honesty.

A Passion for Education and Music

Beyond his professional life, education and music were the pillars of his soul. A dedicated reader, he amassed a vast collection of books and over a thousand HMV records, covering a range of genres including Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, Bhatiyali folk music, and Hindi light classical songs. He strongly believed in universal access to education and actively supported underprivileged students by providing financial aid and educational resources, helping them realize their potential.

A Life Well Lived

In 1971, he married Amena Begum, a university teacher who shared his love for knowledge and culture. Together, they built a harmonious family and raised two children, who later pursued higher education and now reside in the United States.

As per the natural course of life, A.S.M. Habibul Alam passed away in 2001 at the age of 62, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, integrity, and generosity. Though he is no longer with us, his principles, passion, and contributions to education live on—most notably through initiatives like the SpaandanB A.S.M. Habibul Alam Smriti Britti, which continues his mission of empowering underprivileged students through education.

His life was not just a personal journey but a beacon of inspiration for those who strive for excellence, integrity, and service to society.
